8 Wastes of lean

Hi friends! Today we will discus about the 8 wastes of Lean. Many manufacturing industries practice this concept to become more competitive in the market and this concept also reduces Non – Value added activity (NVA).

8 Wastes of lean is listed below :-

  1. Transportation
  2. Inventory
  3. Motion
  4. Waiting
  5. Over-processing
  6. Over-production
  7. Defects
  8. Unutilized Talent

Trasportation :- Whenever a product is moved, the risk of it being damaged or lost or delayed increases which may also  cost for no added value. Transportation actually does not bring any change to the product that the customer will be willing to pay for.

Inventory:- whether it be raw material or work in progress(WIP) or finished goods, represents a capital outlay that has not produced any income either by the producer or for the consumer. Any form of inventories as mentioned above, is not actually processed to add any type of value so is considered as WASTE.

Motion :- As transportation leads to damage of products and transportation cost involved in moving them, motion also leads to the wear and tear of the equipment , regular strained injuries to the workers involved in it. Sometimes it may also lead to accidents that damages the equipment and/ or injures the workers.

Waiting : – Goods that are neither in transport nor being processed are termed as waiting. Wasted time waiting for next step in a process.

Over-processing :- Sometimes over processing may take place at any time where in more work in done on a product that required by the customer.

Overproduction :- It occurs when production of any product is more than the requirement of the customer. Overproduction actually leads to excess stock which requires expenditure for space and preservation of such products that actually do not add any benefit to the customers.

Defects :- Whenever defects occur, extra expenditure is incurred on reworking of the defected part , rescheduling of the production process resulting in extra labour cost and more time in the WIP. Defects at times may double the cost of a single product.

Unutilized Talent – It is most often found that companies fail to recognise and utilise its employees’ inherent skill, knowledge, experience, etc. Such companies misses the opportunity of optimum utilisation of its resources that may lead to dissatisfaction among them resulting to poor performance and at worst situation , leaving the company and switching off to better opportunities. This waste of skill occurs when the management itself is unresponsive , lacks in imparting proper training  and do not assign the jobs to appropriate person.
