WHY WHY ANALYSIS!!

Hi Friends! Today we will discuss about Why – Why Analysis! This is a very famous tool mostly used in manufacturing Industries to solve problems. This tool is used in different TQM initiative like Quality Circle, Kaizen, TPM SGA, Six Sigma etc. Most people do wrong Why Why analysis and take action on wrong root cause which is not effective. In most of the cases people already identify the root cause and do the reverse WHY WHY Analysis which is not the correct method.

If we don’t analyze this method in a correct manner,  we cannot find out the actual root cause.

Benefits of WHY WHY ANALYSIS.

  •  It helps to find out the correct root cause which prevents reoccurrence of problems.

Let us understand with an example

We will do Why Why  analysis of same problem twice and try to find out the root cause then we will decide which one is correct.

Suppose ABC is a pencil manufacturing company. One day it is heavily raining in the city.

And there is excessive water logging in the premises of the company. Now water logging in the premises is the problem.

Lets do 1st Why Why analysis.

(Wrong Approach)

Why 1 – Why is water logged in the premises? (because of rainfall)

Why 2 –  Why did rainfall take place? ( Because of  clouds becoming saturated or filled with droplets)

Why 3 – Why did Clouds get saturated? ( It was unable to hold all the water it contained in vapor form and so it started to condense into liquid in the form of rain)

Why 4 – Finally…. Is it God’s wish that rainfall occurred? (Assumed)   (Which is not correct)

We cannot take corrective action in this case.

Lets do 2nd  Why Why analysis.

( Correct Approach)

Why 1 – Why Water logged in the premises? ( because drains were choked)

Why2 – Why did drains get chocked? ( Because of drainage system not cleaned)

Why 3– Why was the drainage system not cleaned? ( Because of frequency of cleaning of drainage system was the regular)

So in this case we actually find out the root cause ,ie, frequency of cleaning of drainage system was not defined and was irregular for which the drains got choked and when rainfall took place , water did not pass through the drain and water logging started.

Corrective action – So this case corrective action will be cleaning of the drainage system on regular basis as per frequency defined. We will also observe that if the drain is clean regularly and even if the rainfall happens, water will pass through the drain resulting in no more water logging in the premises.

Try to ask upto 5 why questions for getting actual root cause.

  1. HOW IS IT GO WHEN ANSWER OF 2ND OR 3RD WHY ARE TWO POSSIBLE REASONS? FOR EXAMPLE INCOMING MATERIAL WAS NOT GOOD AND UN AWARENESS OF PERSON USED IT.

    • Then in that case you can do two Why Why analysis for both cases.
Fisrt Why Why for incoming material which was not good &
Second Why Why for un awreness of person who was engaged in it.
