Standardization and Horizontal Deployment

Hi folks! Today we will discuss about Standardization & Horizontal deployment. These two things come in place when any improvement has been made and Both act as positive catalyst in manufacturing or service Industry.

Standardization

The goal of standardization is to enforce a level of consistency or uniformity to certain practices or operations within the selected environment.

Let us understand with an example.

Suppose ABC is a tyre manufacturing company and this company supply tyres to Automotive company XX. While assembling the vehicle of XX company, it is found that there are some manufacturing defects in the tyre (say shrinkage defects)

XX company send a customer complain to ABC tyre manufacturer regarding the shrinkage issue of the tyre asking for submission of closure of issue. So, it is the responsibility of ABC company to resolve the issue. Now it is the responsibility of ABC company to find out the root cause and take the corrective action against this problem after brainstorming and team implemented the same concept.  Now team of ABC company can produce shrinkage defect free tyres. Team has changed some temperature parameters in order to produce good quality tyre.

Now Standardization of process through relevant documents need to be done like

• PFMEA,
• Control plan,
• Work Instruction or SOP,
• Check list etc. 

These documents are mandatory in terms of updation.

Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)

After These changes, Team of ABC should impart training on changes made (Temperature parameters) to the operators & maintenance people.

Suppose this problem occurred in one machine (Shrinkage issue), so to get the shrinkage free product we need to change the Temperature parameter in all machines. This is called horizontal deployment. It means if you have already proven methodology of issue (in this case shrinkage) and you have similar machines in your premises then same things can be deployed to other machines as well. This horizontal deployment will give more benefit to organization.
